The Aussiedoodle is a hybrid, also known as a cross-breed or designer breed. Our aussiedoodles are a combination of our AKC Poodle (100%) Dam and our ASDR/NSDR registered Australian Shepherd (100%) Sire. Our F1 puppies are 50/50 - first generation doodles. We will also be offering F1b Aussiedoodles which will be 75% poodle & 25% Australian Shepherd in the near future.
Traits, Personality and Behavior The Aussiedoodle is a cross between an Australian Shepherd and a Poodle. They are highly intelligent, as both the Australian Shepherd and Poodle are known to be "Einsteins" breeds. They are friendly, affectionate, athletic and love to be around people. They are a known companion breed. Depending on the size of the Poodle used in the cross, a standard aussiedoodle's weight can range from 35 to 70 pounds. Aussiedoodles have a moderate to high activity level. They need a good walk or active playtime each day, and they are athletic enough to participate in such dog sports as agility, fly-ball, obedience and rally. They can also be excellent therapy or service dogs and love to have their minds challenged. Our Poodle female Khloe comes from AKC Champion/Titled parents who both have a history of service work. Our sire Ramsey came locally from Buttermore Ranch Aussie's, his parents and grandparents are amazing family ranch dogs who enjoy spending their days in the orchard, with livestock, pool side, taking trips to the ocean, mountains, or just around town day to day. He was hand picked as a puppy. We were lucky enough to have our hands on him from the day he was born. Both Ramsey and Khloe enjoy hiking, daily walks, trips to the baseball fields, time at the ranch, playing with the kids, and lounging around the house. They are amazing with our small children, and provide therapy services for our son with special needs. Our hope was to pull the best qualities and attributes of both breeds into their puppies.
Both of the breeds used to create Aussiedoodles are considered to be canine Einsteins as mentioned above. It's to your benefit to give your puppy a job that will keep them stimulated each day. Teach them new commands, encourage them to go and find/bring you things, play games, go on walks/hikes/or bike rides. Keeping them occupied and setting a good foundation while they are young will ensure your puppy won't go out on their own and find destructive entertainment. It is important to begin socialization and training early and use positive reinforcement techniques such as praise, play and food rewards. You will be rewarded with a wonderful companion if you are consistent with your new puppy. We raise each of our litters using puppy culture. We are hands on with our puppies from day one, socializing, desensitizing, and exposing to new experiences as they grow each week. We brush, play with, clip nails, begin potty and crate training as well as expose them to collars/leashes and daily interactions with children. The hours we invest daily help ensure you take home a puppy with the best possible start and will help set you both up for a lifetime of success. When you choose to purchase a puppy with us, you are investing in a puppy who has had an amazing foundation being raised using a carefully chosen puppy curriculum.
Coat Type/Allergies & Maintenance Poodles have a reputation for being hypoallergenic, meaning most times they can be tolerated by people who have allergies to dogs. However just like humans, they do lose their hair and dander, so you will never see us advertise them as completely hypoallergenic. Because Aussiedoodles have the Poodle in their heritage, they are sometimes promoted as being hypoallergenic by some breeders. But allergies are caused not always caused by a particular dog coat type but by dander, the dead skin cells that are shed by ALL dogs. There is no scientific evidence that any breed or cross breed is more or less allergenic than any other dog. Some people with mild allergies react less severely to particular dog coats, but no reputable breeder will guarantee that their dogs are hypoallergenic. We encourage proper grooming and bathing habits to help with dander/shedding for all our puppies and their new owners. Aussiedoodles can have different types of fur. Some have the long, straight hair of the Australian Shepherd, others resemble a Poodle with curls and some fall somewhere in the middle. When we tested our first litter of F1 aussiedoodles they all came back with a copy of moms Furnishing gene, but still we saw slight variations in types of coats. Depending on the coat type, plan to brush your aussiedoodle often, focusing on those areas around their ears, by their collars, and butt/tail area. Typically clipping around the eyes and face will be necessary every 6 to 8 weeks, and if your doodle has more of the curly coat clipping may be necessary on a regular basis as well. To help prepare your puppy for future groomings, we expose puppies to clippers, scissors, brushes, blowers, and baths early on, long before you take your puppy home.
Aussiedoodles also come in a variety of colors and coat patterns. We have several colors and patterned coats (merle). We aim for healthy, well rounded, family dogs, but we can not lie the cuteness factor plays a part as well. With that being said poodles are famous for changing colors or "fading" they can begin as one color and fade into a completely different color over time. Geneticists have not pinpointed the gene responsible for this change or fading but it is very common in poodles. We have coat tested our poodle mama Khloe, looked at her parents and grandparents who all have wonderful coats and did not fade, her intensity rating is a 9/10 which is great, but with all of that we still never guarantee a puppy's color won't change. Sable puppies will tend to fade, but there's just no for sure way for us to tell one way or another when a puppy is born. For this reason we encourage families to really make sure they are not selecting a puppy specifically on color, but on the personality and traits of their parents, features you like in their older siblings, as well as what our program offers as a whole.
Training and Preparing for Going Home
Aussiedoodles are companion dogs. They love being with people and need daily interactions. Aussiedoodle puppies are adorable, smart, and wonderful family pets. Like any puppy they require dedication, consistency, and an investment of your daily time. When you first bring your puppy home, they may whine, and take a few days to adjust, this is completely normal. Those first few days and weeks can feel like you brought home a needy newborn, this adjustment period requires patience and consistency. Your puppy will begin to learn his/her new home, your rules, and daily schedule. Stay calm and remember lots of positive reinforcements, your puppy is very smart, so just continue to encourage and show them love and consistency.
Your puppy will come with all his/her first vaccination and will be vet cleared before going home. It is important you do not allow your puppy to be exposed to public areas until ALL vaccinations have been completed. Its often an exciting time and we understand you are excited to show off your new companion, but please remember their health and safety should be your top priority, unfortunately their little bodies and still developing immune systems can not handle many of the awful deadly diseases that are often present in public parks/streets/etc.
